Occupational Stress, Coping, and Outcomes among Korean Nurses: An Integrative Review Based on the Transactional Model of Stress and Coping

Background
Korean nurses face high levels of occupational stress due to staff shortages and work overload. This stress varies depending on each individual’s cognitive appraisal and coping strategies and affects both the quality of nursing care and the well-being of the nurses themselves. Therefore, this study is intended to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the cognitive appraisal, coping strategies, and occupational stress outcomes of Korean nurses.
Methods
This integrative review study was based on Lazarus and Folkman’s transactional model of stress and coping. Literature published in Korean or English between March 1984 and July 2025 was reviewed using the RISS, KISS, DBpia, PubMed, and CINAHL databases.
Results
Fourteen studies (13 quantitative descriptive and 1 qualitative) were analyzed regarding occupational stress and coping strategies among nurses. Three key attributes were identified: a high level of occupational stress related to various factors, the use of active and passive coping strategies, and outcomes from coping with occupational stress. No study to date has specifically examined occupational stress appraisal.
Conclusions
It is important to develop strategies that help nurses actively cope with occupational stress, allowing for adaptive outcomes, rather than inefficient ones. These findings are expected to serve as foundational data for the development of occupational stress management programs. Future studies on nurses’ occupational stress will also need to include the concept of cognitive appraisal.

Background
This study aimed to identify stress mindset as an intervention factor for academic stress management within the framework of the Job Demands-Resources Model. We investigated the role of a stress mindset in the relationship between academic demands, resources, burnout, engagement as academic mental health.
Methods
From the perspective of academic interpersonal perceptions, 391 first- and second-year high school students were analyzed using a structural equation model consisting of observed variables with demands and resources from parents, teachers, and peers.
Results
The low-stress mindset group showed a significant pathway from academic demands to academic burnout. The high-stress mindset group demonstrated pathways from academic resources to academic burnout and engagement.
Conclusions
These findings highlight the significance of a stress mindset in enhancing the academic mental health of high school students.
Effect of Work Overload on Job Burnout: The Moderation Effect of Problem-Focused Coping and Job Autonomy

Background
In the contemporary work environment marked by specialization, digitalization, and convergence, job burnout has intensified. This study aims to validate the intricate interplay between individuals and their environment in progression from high-skilled, unstructured job stress.
Methods
This study explores the moderating effects of problem-focused coping and job autonomy on the relationship between work overload and job burnout. The participant pool comprised 150 employees (mean age=40.7, 68.7% women) stationed at large commercial bank branches in Korea.
Results
First, the study did not uncover a statistically significant moderation effect of problem-focused coping on the relationship between work overload and job burnout. Second, the findings revealed that the impact of work overload on job burnout displayed variation contingent upon the levels of problem-focused coping and job autonomy.
Conclusions
This study underscores the pivotal role of ensuring job autonomy within the work environment to effectively mitigate the adverse effects of excessive work situations through problem-focused coping.
The Mediating Role of Anger Rumination in the Relationship between Job Stress and Problem Drinking among Community-Oriented Police Officers

Background
This study investigated the mediating effect of anger rumination in the relationship between job stress and problem drinking among community-oriented police officers.
Methods
The study participants were 107 community-oriented police officers working in local police stations and substations in the Seoul-Gyeonggi area. Participants completed the Police Job Stress Scale, Anger Rumination Scale (K-ARS), and Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT). Data was collected from September to October 2022, and the mediation analysis was performed using SPSS PROCESS Macro model 4.
Results
Analysis showed that anger rumination fully mediates the relationship between job stress and problem drinking among community-oriented police officers.
Conclusions
This study emphasizes the importance of interventions or treatments that address both job stress and anger rumination for community-oriented police officers with alcohol-related problems. Such interventions can contribute to preventing and managing problem drinking that threatens the well-being of individual police officers and the police organization.

본 연구는 외래근무 간호사의 감정노동과 관련요인의 관계를 규명하기 위한 서술적 상관관계연구이다. 대상자는 서울, 경기 지역 대학병원에서 근무하는 외래간호사 236명으로 하였으며, 감정노동과 관련요인(직무자율성, 사회적 지지, 자아존중감, 감성지능, 정서상태, 지각된 감정요구)에 대한 척도를 사용하였다. 지각된 감정 요구도가 높을수록 감정노동 정도가 높고, 직무자율성, 자아존중감이 높을수록 감정노동 정도가 낮게 나타났다. 감정노동 설명 요인을 확인하기 위한 다중회귀분석 결과, 자아존중감과 지각된 감정요구는 감정노동을 30.9% 설명하는 것으로 나타났다. 이에 따라 간호관리자와 병원경영자는 외래근무 간호사의 감정노동과 관련요인의 부정적 효과를 최소화하고, 감정노동을 감소시키기 위한 교육프로그램 개발이 요구된다.

Background

The occurrence of nurse burnout, which could affect the quality of nursing, largely depends on the characteristics of a hospital department. An operating room (OR) environment comes with a high possibility of nurses committing errors, and OR nurses respect the value of patient safety and perform their safety management duties as needed. Although patient safety culture in an OR might affect OR nurse burnout, there is insufficient evidence to show such an association.

Methods

This cross-sectional study was conducted in a hospital in Seoul, South Korea in 2019. One-hundred and twenty-two OR nurses completed the Safety Attitude Questionnaire Korean version 2 and Maslach Burnout Inventory that measured perceived levels of patient safety culture and burnout, respectively.

Results

Correlation analyses found that lower burnout was significantly associated with better patient safety culture. Through a multiple regression, the predictors of emotional exhaustion in patient safety culture identified were job satisfaction (β=−.524, p=.000) and working conditions (β=−.282, p=.015). Working conditions predicted depersonalization (β=−.323, p=.009), while job satisfaction predicted lack of personal accomplishment (β=−.250, p=.004). Meanwhile, years in the unit (β=−.397, p=.001) predicted lack of personal accomplishment.

Conclusions

These results suggest an important role for two dimensions of patient safety culture in mitigating burnout among OR nurses. It would be effective to improve working conditions in ORs by reducing the nurse-patient ratio, and to enhance job satisfaction among OR nurses by securing resources introduced by the conservation of resources theory.

Background:

This study was conducted to examine job stress, sleep quality, and fatigue and identify major variables that influence work engagement in order to develop an intervention program for shift duty nurses to enhance their work engagement.

Methods:

The subjects of this study were 170 nurses working with shift duty at one university hospital and one general hospital located in G city. Data were collected from February to March 2018 with structured questionnaires, and analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe’s test, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple regression.

Results:

The mean scores of job stress, sleep quality, fatigue, and work engagement were 3.87, 1.57, 4.64, and 2.36, respectively. The work engagement was negatively correlated with job stress, sleep quality, and fatigue. The most powerful variable influencing work engagement was sleep quality and the model showed explanatory power of 22.5%.

Conclusions:

The results of this study indicate that the quality of sleep is most important factor affecting work engagement of shift nurses. This study suggest that it is necessary a variety of strategies in order to improve the quality of sleep and to intervene in job stress and fatigue, eventually lead to enhancing nursing performance.

Background:

The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in work-life balance (WLB) between hospital nurses and female wage workers and to investigate its effect on job satisfaction and turnover intention.

Methods:

This exploratory comparative study used data from five general hospital nurses (n=437) and college-graduate level female wage workers (n=786). After propensity score matching, the effects of WLB subtypes (work→life balance, life→work balance) on job satisfaction and turnover intention were analyzed.

Results:

Hospital nurses had lower levels of WLB subtypes (2.6±0.5, 2.6±0.5), lower job satisfaction (2.8±0.7), higher turnover intention rate (65.5%) than wage workers (3.1±0.4, 2.9±0.4, 3.5±0.5, 1.7%). Analysis of job satisfaction showed significant relationship between work→life balance and job satisfaction in both groups (β=0.32, p≤.001; β=0.18, p=.004). Second, the analysis of turnover intention differed between the two groups. Among hospital nurses, the higher the level of work→life balance, the lower the turnover intention rate (OR=0.49, p=.015), while among wage workers, the opposite was true (OR=0.29, p=.038).

Conclusions:

The level of WLB of hospital nurses was relatively low, negatively affecting job satisfaction and turnover intentions. Despite being one of the major female professions, the nursing occupation lacks support for WLB, suggesting a need for tailored support through organizational and social systems.

The Effect of Emotional Labor, Job Stress and Social Support on Nurses’ Job Satisfaction

Background:

This study was a descriptive survey research on nurse’s job satisfaction to identify the effects of emotional labor, job stress, social support.

Methods:

The participants were 177 shift nurses working at three general hospital. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, pearson correlation coefficients and multiple regression with SPSS 22.0.

Results:

Job satisfaction of nurses was positively correlated with deep acting of emotional labor and social support, while job satisfaction and job stress were negatively correlated. Social support was positively correlated with deep acting of emotional labor. And job stress had a positive correlation with the surface acting of emotional labor. The most important factor affecting nurse’s job satisfaction was deep acting of emotional labor (β=.446), social support (β=.326), job stress (β=−.198), and age (β=.161), which together explained there job satisfaction up to 42.5% (F=22.690, p<.001).

Conclusions:

Through this study result, we found the factors influencing nurse’s job satisfaction were such as deep acting of emotional labor, social support, job stress, and age, among which the deep acting was the most influential factor. The results of this study reveals that an operation of educational program relating to the deep acting is needed for improving the nurse’s job satisfaction. And social support is also required highly, such as the active communication programs for cooperation of nurses and the providing resources necessary for work. In addition, a special program coping the stress intensification should be operated to reduce job stress.

Background:

Burnout is known to be a multidimensional concept consisting of three sub-types, but it is not well known how each sub-type is associated with job stress and job satisfaction.

Methods:

This study conducted a survey with Nurses (N=192) in Seoul and Gyeonggi province, and analyzed how three subtypes of burnout (measured by Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI)) were associated with job stress and job satisfaction.

Results:

The results suggested that job stress affected, among the subtypes of exhaustion, emotional exhaustion and depersonalization burnout, but did not affect achievement reduction burnout. On the other hand, job satisfaction had significant effects on achievement reduction burnout, but it did not affect emotional exhaustion and depersonalization burnout.

Conclusions:

Among the subtypes of burnout, emotion exhaustion and depersonalization may have different psychological processes from reduced achievement.

Background:

For efficient management of an organization’s human resource, it is crucial to increase the job satisfaction of women managers, since it is closely related to an individual’s job performance and company’s one. In this regard, this research explores how women managers’ job stress and managerial efficacy affect their job satisfaction.

Methods:

This research uses the fifth wave of Korean Women Manager Panel (KWMP) collected in 2015. The 1,537 women managers who work at a company with 100 or more employees are employed and the data are analyzed using ordinary least squares (OLS).

Results:

Income, job stress, and managerial efficacy have a statistically significant effect on job satisfaction. In addition, managerial efficacy has a moderating effect between job-related stress and job satisfaction.

Conclusions:

This study suggests the meaningful findings that in terms of boosting women manager’s job satisfaction, it is requested to promote their managerial efficacy at the human resource management level.

Background:

The purpose of this study is to explore the effect of teacher mindfulness in teaching settings on job stress and burnout.

Methods:

Based on the previous studies, this study established a research model in which the teachers’ job stress affects their burnout by the mediation of mindfulness, and verified the relationship between them using the teacher mindfulness scale in teaching situations.

Results:

First, female teachers perceived more job stress and experienced higher burnout than male teachers. Second, teacher’s job stress and burnout showed high positive correlation, and mindfulness showed high negative correlation with job stress and burnout. Third, it was verified that teacher mindfulness significantly mediated the effect of job stress on burnout.

Conclusions:

This study suggests that teachers’ mindfulness is effective in managing their job stress and preventing burnout.

Background:

The aims of this paper is to investigate the moderating effect of emotional intelligence on the relationship between emotional labor and job satisfaction of hotel employees and to find a way to increase job satisfaction of them.

Methods:

This study is a cross-sectional empirical study conducted for hotel employees in Korea. A total of 314 completed responses were collected and analyzed. Hierarchical regression analysis was employed to test the hypotheses.

Results:

Emotional dissonance decrease job satisfaction, but emotional effort improves it. “Ability to understand emotion” and “ability to understand others’ emotion” are moderating factors that increase job satisfaction joining with emotional effort.

Conclusions:

In order for hotel employees to be satisfied with their jobs, it is necessary to develop and implement an emotional intelligence improvement education program that can improve job satisfaction by positively moderating emotional labor.

Background:

This study is a descriptive survey research that aims to investigate occupational stress and burden in preceptor nurses.

Methods:

A total of 173 preceptors have more than 3 years experiences were recruited from 2 university hospital in S-city and I-city.

Results:

The job demand of occupational stress in preceptor nurses was higher than top 25% of Korean workers. To investigate the level of job demand, preceptor’s burden examined, the preceptor’s burden related to new nurses was higher than other reasons. Variables influencing preceptor’s burden were; work department, education period per new nurse and education level of preceptor.

Conclusions:

We suggest repeated research of preceptor nurse’s occupational stress and burden with more variables and it is necessary policy support for nurse’s work environment and improved treatment.

Background:

This study is a descriptive survey research that aims to provide basic data for efficient human resource management that can contribute to reducing turnover rate among nurses, by identifying the impact of sleep disorder and job stress on the turnover intention of shift working nurses and understanding the key factors influencing their turnover intention.

Methods:

The subjects of this research were 188 nurses working 8-hour shifts in J-city, G-city and N-city, of which 13 respondents who produced unreliable answers were excluded from the analysis, making the total number of valid questionnaire 175. Collected data were analyzed with a SPSS 12.0 program using descriptive statistics, ANOVA, correlation and stepwise multiple regression.

Results:

As for correlation between domains, sleep disorder and turnover intention had positive correlation. Between job stress and turnover intention, the total job stress was positively correlated with turnover intention. Variables influencing turnover intention among the subjects were; the more clinically experienced, and in regards to job stress, the less adapted to workplace climate, the lower the level of payment and the more serious the sleep disorder.

Conclusions:

In conclusion, as a nurse in shift work, the more clinical experience, the less the salary, the more sleeping obstacles, the less the job adaptation to the work culture, the more the degree of turnover is found to be high.

Background:

Purpose of this study was to investigate the degree of burnout and to explore factors affecting burnout among coast guard of west regional headquarters in Korea.

Methods:

Self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted on 250 coast guard members working in west sea area. A total of 238 data were analyzed with frequency analysis, t-test or ANOVA, Scheffe test, Pearson’s correlation and multiple regression analysis.

Results:

The mean score for burnout (2.38±0.91), depression (6.38±5.28), secondary traumatic stress (2.25±0.63), job stress (2.70±0.78), and social support (3.50±0.72) were presented. The significant major predictors of burnout were job stress, depression, social support, current work unit-office, current work unit-vessel, satisfaction with work unit-dissatisfaction, and satisfaction with work unit-medium. Explanatory power for variables was 61.3%.

Conclusions:

To prevent and manage burnout on proper level, it is recommended to develop and implement support programs to lower job stress and depression while boosting familial and social support.

Background:

This study explored how the personal and job characteristics, professionalism, organizational commitment and depression of public social work officials affect their job satisfaction in Korea.

Methods:

296 samples were selected from the raw data of the public social work officials working in the Seoul-Gyeonggi metropolitan area, which were collected by a research center in Korea, for this study. It conducted multiple regression analysis.

Results:

As results of the augmented regression analysis, gender, organizational commitment and depression were key factors to determine the job satisfaction of social work public officials in Korea.

Conclusions:

Findings of this study recommended us policy and administrative implications to increase their job satisfaction.

The purpose of the study was to identify the effect of calling, meaning of work, job stress, and stress coping on organizational commitment among career soldiers. Data were collected from 160 career soldiers using a structured self-reported questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression. The results showed the mean scores were organizational commitment 3.72±0.80, calling 3.00±0.66, meaning of work 3.05±0.36, job stress 2.28±0.35, active stress coping 3.67±0.36, and passive stress coping 3.16±0.41 each. Organizational commitment had positive correlation with calling (r=.19, p=.019), meaning of work(r=.45, p<.001), and active stress coping (r=.44, p<.001); but negative correlation with job stress (r=−.53, p<.001). The affecting factors were job stress (β=−.36), active stress coping (β=.18), meaning of work (β=.17), monthly income (β=−.16) in order. The explained variances for organizational commitment was 37.0% among career soldiers. Therefore, in order to improve the organizational commitment of career soldiers, it is necessary to promote active coping skills to reduce job stress and to develop educational strategies to give meaning of work as a career soldier from the period of junior leaders.
