서 론

최근 실태조사에 따르면 우리나라 인구 10명 중 약 9명이 스마트폰을 보유하고 있으며, 그 사용시간은 지속적으로 증가하는 것으로 나타났다(Korea Internet & Security Agency, 2018). 그러나 스마트폰을 지나치게 사용하게 되면서 스마트폰 사용과 관련한 내성(이전과 동일한 효과를 얻기 위해 더 많이 사용)과 금단 증상(사용하지 못하면 불안하거나 초조)이 나타나고, 일상생활에 지장을 초래하는 스마트폰 중독이 함께 증가하고 있는 추세이다(Ministry of Science and ICT, 2018). 스마트폰은 휴대폰과 인터넷 기능을 합친 것으로, 기존의 휴대폰 중독, 인터넷 중독과 같은 행위중독의 하나로 간주될 수 있다(Park SB et al., 2014). 따라서 본 연구에서는 Griffiths(2005)가 제안한 행위중독의 개념에 근거하여 스마트폰 중독을 신체적, 심리적, 사회적으로 부정적인 결과를 초래함에도 불구하고 스마트폰을 강박적으로 사용하며 스스로 사용을 통제하지 못하는 상태로 정의하였다(Lee JH et al., 2016).

실제로 2011년부터 2017년까지의 통계 조사에 따르면 20∼60대 성인들의 스마트폰 과의존 비율이 매년마다 상승하는 추세로 나타났고, 세부 연령별로 살펴봤을 때 20대에서 고위험군이 3.6%, 잠재적 위험군이 20.0%로 가장 높은 것으로 나타났다(Ministry of Science and ICT, 2018). 스마트폰 중독의 수준이 높을수록 거북목 및 손목터널 증후군(Kim TH et al., 2017), 눈의 피로와 근육통(Yun JY et al., 2011) 등 신체적인 문제, 기억력 손상(Lim JY, 2018), 학교생활 부적응(Ju SJ, 2015), 대인관계 갈등(Park SJ et al., 2014)과 같은 일상생활의 장애, 공격성의 증가(Jeing WC et al., 2015), 수면장애(Park MJ et al., 2015), 주의력 결핍과 과잉행동장애(Kim DH et al., 2013) 등 정신건강의 어려움을 더 많이 겪는 것으로 나타났다. 더 나아가 스마트폰 중독이 심해짐에 따라 자살행동이 증가하고(Jang YE, 2018), 교통사고가 빈번하게 일어나는 등(Ministry of Public Safety and Security, 2016) 국가적 개입이 필요한 사회적 문제로까지 이어지게 되었다. 이와 같은 스마트폰 중독의 심각성과 이에 수반된 역기능적 문제들을 고려할 때 스마트폰 중독으로 이르게 하는 구체적인 심리적 메커니즘을 살펴볼 필요가 있다.

선행 연구에 따르면 스마트폰 중독에 영향을 미치는 대표적인 요인은 부정적 정서였으며, 다양한 부정적 정서 중에서도 특히 우울, 불안, 스트레스가 스마트폰 중독과 밀접하게 관련된다고 알려져 있다. 예를 들면, 국외에서 스마트폰 중독과 관련된 수십 편의 논문을 체계적으로 리뷰한 결과, 우울, 불안, 스트레스가 높을수록 스마트폰 중독의 수준도 일관되게 높게 나타났다(Elhai et al., 2017). 국내 연구에서도 우울(Kim EY et al., 2016), 불안(Park SG, 2016), 스트레스(Jeon HS et al., 2014)가 높은 대학생일수록 스마트폰 중독 수준이 더 높은 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 국내 청소년을 대상으로 한 연구들을 메타분석한 결과에 따르면 우울과 불안(No UK, 2018), 그리고 스트레스(Lee CH, 2015)가 스마트폰 중독의 위험을 증가시키는 것으로 나타났다. 나아가, 전향적 장기종단 연구에 의하면 우울, 불안, 스트레스는 스마트폰 중독을 예측할 것으로 보인다. 스마트폰 중독의 전향적 연구는 아직 없으나 스마트폰 중독과 유사한 인터넷 중독의 경우, 우울 수준이 높은 성인일수록 1년 후 측정한 인터넷 중독의 수준이 더 높았으며(Guillot et al., 2016), 불안 수준이 높은 청소년일수록 2년 후의 인터넷 중독 수준이 더 높게 나타났고(Stavropoulos et al., 2017), 업무 스트레스가 많은 직장인일수록 6개월 후 측정한 인터넷 중독의 수준이 더 심각했다(Chen et al., 2014). 따라서 우울, 불안, 스트레스는 각각 스마트폰 중독에 선행하여 영향을 미치는 중요한 변인이다.

우울, 불안, 스트레스와 같은 부정적 정서가 스마트폰 중독의 위험을 증가시키는 데에 충동성(impulsivity)이라는 성격 특질이 관여할 것으로 여겨진다. 실제로 많은 선행 연구들에서 충동성은 중독의 종류를 막론하고 그 위험을 증가시키는 것으로 알려져 있다(Verdejo-García et al., 2008; Park SE et al., 2016). 충동성은 단일 요인이 아니라 긴급성, 신중성 부족, 감각추구 등 여러 가지 요인으로 구성되어 있는데, 그 중 특히 부정 긴급성(negative urgency)이라는 요인이 우울, 불안, 스트레스와 같은 부정적 정서 상태와 밀접하게 관련되어 있다. 부정 긴급성은 부정적 정서 상태일 때 성급하고 충동적인 행동을 하려는 경향을 의미한다(Cyders et al., 2007b). 선행 연구에 따르면, 우울, 불안, 스트레스 수준이 높을수록 부정 긴급성 수준이 높은 것으로 나타났고(Claréus et al., 2017), 부정적 정서 또는 스트레스를 더 많이 경험하는 성인일수록 부정 긴급성이 증가하는 것으로 나타났다(Lavender et al., 2015; Lim SY et al., 2018; Park JY, 2018). 이러한 부정 긴급성은 알코올(Coskunpinar et al., 2013), 약물(Verdejo-García et al., 2007), 담배(Doran et al., 2013)와 같은 물질중독의 위험을 높일뿐만 아니라, 인터넷(Billieux et al., 2010), 도박(Shin MC, 2017), 폭식(Fischer et al., 2008), 강박적 구매(Billieux et al., 2008a)와 같은 행위중독의 위험을 증가시키는 것으로 나타났다. 특히, 부정 긴급성은 충동성의 하위요인들 중에서 휴대폰 중독을 가장 잘 예측하였고(Billieux et al., 2008b; De-Sola et al., 2017), 부정 긴급성이 높을수록 스마트폰 중독 수준이 높은 것으로 최근 밝혀졌다(Barrault et al., 2018).

위와 같은 선행 연구들을 토대로 볼 때, 개인이 부정적 정서를 더 많이 경험할수록 부정적 정서 상태에서 충동적으로 행동하려는 경향성이 높아지고 이에 따라 중독에 빠질 위험이 더 높아질 것이라 가정할 수 있다. 이러한 경로에 대해 Billieux(2012)는 문헌 연구를 기반으로 우울, 불안, 스트레스와 같은 부정적 정서를 강하게 느낄 때 충동성의 하위요인인 부정 긴급성이 높아지고 이는 곧 중독으로 귀결되는 ‘충동성 경로(impulsive pathway)’를 제안하였다. 실제 연구에서도, 우울 수준이 높은 대학생일수록 부정 긴급성 수준이 높았고 이로 인해 알코올 중독의 위험이 높아졌다(Gonzalez et al., 2011). 또한, 불안 수준이 높은 대학생일수록 부정 긴급성 수준이 더 높았고 이렇게 높아진 부정 긴급성은 자기비난, 반추, 파국화와 같은 부적응적인 정서조절 전략의 사용을 촉진시켜 결국에는 알코올 중독이 심해지는 것으로 나타났다(Lim SY et al., 2018). 이와 비슷하게, 스트레스를 많이 느끼는 대학생일수록 부정 긴급성 수준이 높아져 도박중독이 더욱 심화되는 것으로 나타났다(Park JY, 2018). 아울러, 전반적인 부정적 정서를 더 많이 경험할수록 부정 긴급성이 높아졌고 이는 인터넷 게임 중독(Jeong NA, 2017)과 폭식행동(Lavender et al., 2015)의 위험을 증가시켰다. 나아가, 외상 후 스트레스 장애 증상이 더 심할수록 부정 긴급성 수준이 높았으며 이는 스마트폰 중독 위험을 증가시키는 것으로 나타났다(Contractor et al., 2017).

종합하면, 우울, 불안, 스트레스와 같은 부정적 정서 상태는 충동성의 하위요인인 부정 긴급성을 통해 물질 및 행위 중독에 영향을 미치는 것으로 보인다. 하지만 행위중독의 하나인 스마트폰 중독의 위험을 증가시키는 데 있어 이러한 기제를 직접적으로 살펴본 연구는 없는 실정이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 우울, 불안, 스트레스가 각각 스마트폰 중독에 직접 영향을 미치기도 하지만 부정 긴급성을 통해 간접적으로도 영향을 미칠 것이라는 부분매개 효과를 살펴보고자 하였다. 이를 통해 스마트폰 중독의 심리적 기제를 이해하고 스마트폰 중독 개입에 대한 구체적인 시사점을 제공하고자 하였다.

연구방법

1. 연구 설계

본 연구는 대학(원)생을 대상으로 우울, 불안, 스트레스, 부정 긴급성, 스마트폰 중독의 관계를 알아보기 위한 서술적 조사연구이다.

2. 연구 대상

본 연구는 전남대학교 생명윤리심의위원회의 승인을 받은 후 실시되었다. 4년제 대학교에 재학 중인 대학(원)생 366명을 대상으로 연구에 대한 고지된 동의를 하고 자발적으로 참여한 이들에게 동의서를 받은 후 설문을 실시하였다. 불성실하게 응답한 16명의 자료를 제외하고 최종적으로 350명(M=21.61세, SD=2.19; 여자 263명, 남자 87명)의 자료를 분석에 사용하였다. 스마트폰 하루 평균 사용시간은 1시간 미만 1명(0.3%), 1∼3시간 60명(17.1%), 3∼5시간 146명(41.7%), 5∼7시간 93명(26.6%), 7시간 이상 50명(14.5%)이었다.

3. 연구 도구

1) 우울ㆍ불안ㆍ스트레스 척도

우울, 불안, 그리고 스트레스를 측정하기 위해 우울ㆍ불안ㆍ스트레스 척도(Depression Anxiety Stress Scale, DASS; Lovibond et al., 1995)를 국내에서 타당화한 척도(Lee GW, 2007)를 사용하였다. 이 척도는 총 42문항(4점 likert형 척도; 0=나에게 전혀 해당되지 않는다, 3점=나에게 매우 많이 또는 대부분의 시간이 해당된다)으로, 우울, 불안, 스트레스의 세 가지 하위요인이 각각 14문항으로 구성되어 있다. 점수가 높을수록 우울, 불안, 스트레스 각각의 수준이 높음을 의미한다. 척도의 내적 합치도(Cronbach’s α)는 Lee GW(2007)의 연구에서는 우울은 .95, 불안은 .91, 스트레스는 .95이었고, 본 연구에서는 각각 .94, .90, .92였다.

2) 스마트폰 중독 척도

스마트폰 중독을 측정하기 위해 행위중독 준거기반 스마트폰 중독 척도(Smartphone Addiction Scale Based on Behavioral Addiction Criteria, SAS-B; Lee JH et al., 2016)을 사용하였다. 이 척도는 행위중독의 특징인 내성, 금단, 현저성, 기분조절, 갈등, 재발의 내용으로 구성되어 있으며, 총 24문항(5점 likert형 척도; 1=전혀 그렇지 않다, 5=매우 그렇다)으로 총점이 높을수록 스마트폰 중독의 수준이 높음을 의미한다. 척도의 내적 합치도는 Lee JH et al.(2016)의 연구에서는 .93이었고, 본 연구에서는 .90이었다.

3) 한국판 다차원적 충동성 척도

부정 긴급성을 측정하기 위해 다차원적 충동성 척도(UPPS-P; Whiteside et al., 2001; Cyders et al., 2007b)를 국내에서 타당화한 척도(Lim SY et al., 2014)에서 부정 긴급성 하위척도(총 12문항; 4점 likert형 척도; 1=매우 동의함, 4=매우 동의하지 않음)을 사용하였다. 점수가 높을수록 부정 긴급성 수준이 높음을 의미한다. 척도의 내적 합치도는 Lim SY et al.(2014)의 연구에서는 .85였고, 본 연구에서는 .90이었다.

4. 자료 분석

수집된 자료는 SPSS Statistics for Windows, version 23(IBM Corp., Armonk, NY) 통계 프로그램을 사용하여 분석하였다. 먼저, 본 연구 변인들의 평균과 표준편차, 범위를 구했고, 변인들 간의 관계를 알아보기 위해 Pearson의 상관분석을 실시하였다. 다음으로 우울, 불안, 스트레스 각각과 스마트폰 중독의 관계에서 부정 긴급성의 매개효과를 확인하기 위해 위계적 회귀분석을 실시하였다. 또한 부정 긴급성의 간접효과에 대한 유의성 검증을 위해 PROCESS macro(Hayes, 2013)를 사용하여 bootstrapping (표본 수=5,000) 분석을 실시하였다. 마지막으로, 본 연구에서 성별, 연령, 스마트폰 하루 평균 사용시간에 따라 주요 변인에서 차이가 있었기 때문에 모든 회귀분석과 bootstrapping 분석에서 이 세 가지를 통제변인으로 설정하여 이들의 효과를 통제하고도 부정 긴급성의 매개효과가 존재하는지 살펴보았다.

결 과

1. 변인 간의 관계

연구 변인들의 평균과 표준편차, 범위, 상관분석 결과가 Table 1에 제시되어 있다. 상관분석 결과, 우울(r=.37, p<.001), 불안(r=.34, p<.001), 스트레스(r=.45, p<.001) 모두 스마트폰 중독과 유의한 정적 상관을 보여, 각 변인의 수준이 높을수록 스마트폰 중독 수준이 높은 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 우울(r=.41, p<.001), 불안(r=.35, p<.001), 스트레스(r=.57, p<.001) 모두 부정 긴급성과도 유의한 정적 상관을 보여, 각 변인의 수준이 높을수록 부정 긴급성 수준이 높은 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로, 부정 긴급성은 스마트폰 중독과 유의한 정적 상관을 보여(r=.50, p<.001), 강한 부정적 정서를 경험할 때 충동적으로 행동하는 경향이 높을수록 스마트폰 중독 수준이 더 높은 것으로 나타났다.

2. 매개효과 검증

1) 우울과 스마트폰 중독의 관계에서 부정 긴급성의 매개효과

우울이 스마트폰 중독에 미치는 영향에서 부정 긴급성의 매개효과를 검증하기 위해 회귀분석을 실시한 결과가 Table 2에 제시되어 있다. 분석 결과, 참여자의 성별, 연령, 스마트폰 하루 평균 사용시간을 통제한 후에도, 첫째, 우울은 스마트폰 중독에 정적인 방향으로 유의한 영향을 미쳤다(β=.33, p<.001). 둘째, 우울은 부정 긴급성에 정적인 방향으로 유의한 영향을 미쳤다(β=.38, p<.001). 셋째, 우울을 예측변인, 부정 긴급성을 매개변인으로 함께 투입했을 때 우울이 스마트폰 중독에 미치는 회귀계수는 감소했지만 여전히 유의했다(β=.18, p<.001). 따라서 부정 긴급성이 우울과 스마트폰 중독의 관계를 부분매개하는 것으로 나타났다. 아울러, 부정 긴급성의 간접효과의 유의성을 검증하기 위해 bootstrapping 분석을 실시한 결과가 Table 3에 제시되어 있다. 분석 결과, 신뢰구간에서 0을 포함하지 않아(95% CI [0.18, 0.36]) 우울이 부정 긴급성을 통해 스마트폰 중독에 미치는 간접효과가 유의한 것으로 나타났다.

2) 불안과 스마트폰 중독의 관계에서 부정 긴급성의 매개효과

불안이 스마트폰 중독에 미치는 영향에서 부정 긴급성의 매개효과를 검증하기 위해 회귀분석을 실시한 결과가 Table 4에 제시되어 있다. 분석 결과, 참여자의 성별, 연령, 스마트폰 하루 평균 사용시간을 통제한 후에도, 첫째, 불안은 스마트폰 중독에 정적인 방향으로 유의한 영향을 미쳤다(β=.34, p<.001). 둘째, 불안은 부정 긴급성에 정적인 방향으로 유의한 영향을 미쳤다(β=.34, p<.001). 셋째, 불안을 예측변인, 부정 긴급성을 매개변인으로 함께 투입했을 때 불안이 스마트폰 중독에 미치는 회귀계수는 감소했지만 여전히 유의했다(β=.20, p<.001). 따라서 부정 긴급성이 불안과 스마트폰 중독의 관계를 부분매개하는 것으로 나타났다. 아울러, 부정 긴급성의 간접효과의 유의성을 검증하기 위해 bootstrapping 분석을 실시한 결과 신뢰구간에서 0을 포함하지 않아(95% CI [0.23, 0.45]) 불안이 부정 긴급성을 통해 스마트폰 중독에 미치는 간접효과가 유의한 것으로 나타났다(Table 5).

3) 스트레스와 스마트폰 중독의 관계에서 부정 긴급성의 매개효과

스트레스가 스마트폰 중독에 미치는 영향에서 부정 긴급성의 매개효과를 검증하기 위해 회귀분석을 실시한 결과가 Table 6에 제시되어 있다. 분석 결과, 참여자의 성별, 연령, 스마트폰 하루 평균 사용시간을 통제한 후에도, 첫째, 스트레스는 스마트폰 중독에 정적인 방향으로 유의한 영향을 미쳤다(β=.41, p<.001). 둘째, 스트레스는 부정 긴급성에 정적인 방향으로 유의한 영향을 미쳤다(β=.55, p<.001). 셋째, 스트레스를 예측변인, 부정 긴급성을 매개변인으로 함께 투입했을 때 스트레스가 스마트폰 중독에 미치는 회귀계수는 감소했지만 여전히 유의했다(β=.23, p<.001). 따라서 부정 긴급성이 스트레스와 스마트폰 중독의 관계를 부분매개하는 것으로 나타났다. 아울러, 부정 긴급성의 간접효과의 유의성을 검증하기 위해 bootstrapping 분석을 실시한 결과 신뢰구간에서 0을 포함하지 않아(95% CI [0.26, 0.50]) 스트레스가 부정 긴급성을 통해 스마트폰 중독에 미치는 간접효과가 유의한 것으로 나타났다(Table 7).

고 찰

본 연구에서는 우울, 불안 및 스트레스와 같은 부정적 정서가 부정 긴급성을 통하여 스마트폰 중독에 영향을 미치는지 살펴보기 위해 대학(원)생 350명을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였다. 연구에서 도출된 결과와 그에 따른 논의는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 변인들 간의 관계를 살펴본 결과, 우울, 불안, 스트레스는 각각 스마트폰 중독과 정적 상관을 보였다. 이는 우울, 불안, 스트레스와 스마트폰 중독 간 정적 상관이 있다는 국외 리뷰 연구(Elhai et al., 2017)와, 우울, 불안, 또는 스트레스를 많이 느끼는 대학생일수록 스마트폰 중독 수준이 높다는 국내 연구와 일치하는 결과이다(Jeon HS et al., 2014; Kim EY et al., 2016; Park SG, 2016). 우울, 불안, 스트레스는 각각 부정 긴급성과도 정적 상관을 보였다. 이는 우울 불안, 스트레스와 부정 긴급성 간 정적 상관을 나타낸 연구와 일관된 결과이며(Claréus et al., 2017), 부정적 정서 또는 스트레스를 많이 느낄수록 부정 긴급성을 더 많이 느낀다는 결과와 맥락을 같이한다(Lavender et al., 2015; Lim SY et al., 2018; Park JY, 2018). 마지막으로, 부정 긴급성은 스마트폰 중독과 정적 상관을 보였다. 이는 부정 긴급성과 스마트폰 중독 간 정적 상관을 보인 기존 연구(Contractor et al., 2017; Barrault et al., 2018)와 일치하는 결과이며, 부정 긴급성이 높을수록 인터넷 및 휴대폰 중독 위험이 높다는 선행 연구 결과와 같은 맥락이다(Billieux et al., 2008b; Billieux et al., 2010; De-Sola et al., 2017).

둘째, 매개효과를 검증한 결과, 연령, 성별 그리고 스마트폰 하루 평균 사용시간을 통제하고도 우울, 불안, 스트레스는 각각 스마트폰 중독에 부분매개효과를 갖는 것으로 나타났다. 즉, 우울, 불안, 스트레스는 스마트폰 중독에 직접적으로 영향을 미치기도 하지만 부정 긴급성을 통해 간접적으로도 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 우울, 불안, 스트레스와 같은 부정적 정서의 수준이 높을수록 그러한 부정적 정서 상태 속에서 충동적으로 행동하려는 경향성이 높아지게 되고, 이렇게 높아진 부정 긴급성이 스마트폰 중독의 위험을 증가시킬 수 있음을 의미한다. 이러한 결과는 스마트폰 중독은 아니지만 우울, 불안, 스트레스와 같은 부정적 정서가 부정 긴급성을 통해 중독 행동으로 이어진다고 나타난 기존 연구 결과들과 동일한 맥락이다. 예를 들어, 우울이나 불안을 많이 느낄수록 부정 긴급성이 증가하여 이로 인해 알코올 중독 위험이 증가했고(Gonzalez et al., 2011; Lim SY et al., 2018), 스트레스를 많이 느낄수록 부정 긴급성이 높아져 그 결과 도박중독 위험이 증가했으며(Park JY, 2018), 전반적인 부정적 정서를 많이 경험할수록 부정 긴급성이 높아졌고 이는 인터넷 게임 중독(Jeong NA, 2017)과 폭식행동(Lavender et al., 2015)의 위험을 증가시키는 결과를 초래했다. 이와 같은 선행 연구 결과와 일관된 맥락으로, 본 연구에서는 우울, 불안, 또는 스트레스를 많이 받는 대학(원)생일수록 부정적 정서 상태에서 충동적으로 스마트폰을 사용하는 경향이 증가하게 되고 이로 인해 스마트폰 중독으로 이어진다는 결과가 도출되었다.

실제로 스마트폰 중독과 같은 충동적인 행동은 정서적인 맥락에서 발생할 가능성이 높다는 연구 결과들이 제시되고 있다(Cyders et al., 2007a). 일부 연구에서는 부정 긴급성이 높을수록 부정적 정서에 자동반사적으로 반응하여, 장기적인 목표에 초점을 둔 합리적인 의사결정보다는 즉각적인 만족을 위해 후회할만한 행동을 하게 된다고 설명한다(Cyders et al., 2008; Smith et al., 2016). 이러한 주장은 뇌영상 연구 결과를 통해서도 지지되었는데, 부정 긴급성이 높을수록 부정적 정서를 표상하는 편도체(amygdala)의 활성이 증가되고(Cyders et al., 2014), 목표지향적인 행동을 계획하고 행동의 가능한 결과를 고려하여 의사결정을 하도록 하는 안와전두피질(orbitofrontal cortex)과 전측대상피질(anterior cingulate cortex)의 활성은 감소되는 것으로 나타났다(Joseph et al., 2009). 또한, Billiuex와 그의 동료들은 실험을 통해서 부정 긴급성의 심리적 기제를 살펴보았는데, 부정 긴급성은 정서적인 자극에 대해 자동반사적인 반응을 억제하지 못하고 자신에게 불리한 선택을 하는 경향으로 설명되었고, 이는 곧 중독행동의 위험을 증가시키는 것으로 나타났다(Billieux et al., 2010). 따라서 본 연구 결과는 우울, 불안, 스트레스와 같은 부정적 정서 상태에서 증가된 부정 긴급성이 의사결정 능력을 감소시켜 스마트폰 중독 위험을 증가시킨다고 설명될 수 있다.

또 다른 한편으로는 부정적인 정서를 감소시키기 위한 충동적인 대처방식의 하나로 스마트폰을 사용하게 되는 것으로 설명될 수 있다. 선행 연구에 따르면 부정적 정서 그 자체보다는 그러한 고통스러운 정서 상태로부터 빠르게 벗어나고자 하는 시도로 알코올을 사용하거나(Gonzales et al., 2011), 도박(Park JY, 2018)이나 폭식(Lavender et al., 2015)에 몰두하게 되고, 이로 인해 중독까지 이어진다고 설명하고 있다. 특히, 획득된 준비성 이론(Acquired Preparedness)에 따르면 부정 긴급성이 높은 사람은 충동적으로 행동할 가능성이 높기 때문에 스마트폰 사용과 같은 행동이 일시적으로는 부정적 정서 상태를 완화시키는 경험을 할 수 있고, 이러한 학습은 스마트폰 사용이 부정적 정서를 완화해줄 것이라는 기대를 형성하게 되어, 부정적 정서를 경험할 때마다 스마트폰 사용이 강화되어 결국 중독행동으로 이어질 수 있다(Schaumberg et al., 2013).

위의 결과를 토대로 본 연구가 갖는 의의는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 본 연구는 대학(원)생을 대상으로 우울, 불안, 스트레스 각각의 변인이 스마트폰 중독에 미치는 과정에서 부정 긴급성의 역할을 규명하였다. 지금까지는 우울, 불안, 스트레스와 부정 긴급성과의 관계, 부정 긴급성과 스마트폰 중독 간의 관계를 개별적으로 살펴본 연구들은 있었지만, 본 연구에서처럼 우울, 불안, 스트레스와 같은 부정적 정서가 부정 긴급성을 통해 스마트폰 중독에 영향을 미치는 기제를 확인한 연구는 없었다. 이는 이론으로만 존재하던 우울, 불안, 스트레스와 같은 부정적 정서가 충동성의 하위요인인 부정 긴급성을 통해 행위중독에 이르게 된다는 ‘충동성 경로’(Billieux, 2012)가 스마트폰 중독에도 적용된다는 것을 경험적으로 증명한 것이기도 하다.

둘째, 본 연구 결과는 스마트폰 중독 개입 시 우울, 불안, 스트레스와 같은 부정적 정서를 경험할 때 충동적으로 행동하려는 경향성을 감소시키는 것에 초점을 맞출 필요가 있음을 시사한다. 아직 부정 긴급성을 직접적으로 다루는 개입법은 없지만, 기존의 변증법적 행동치료(Dialectical Behavioral Therapy; Linenhan, 1993)에서처럼 강한 부정적 정서 상태에서 충동적으로 반응하는 것을 참아내고 조절하는 기술 습득에 초점을 맞추는 것이 부정 긴급성을 다루는 데 효과적일 수 있으며, 이는 실제로 중독행동 개입에도 사용되고 있다(Robins et al., 2004). 또한, 최근에 충동조절에 문제가 있는 이들을 위해 비디오 게임 형식을 활용한 프로그램이 개발되었는데, 이 프로그램을 통해 부정적 정서 수준을 낮추고 의사결정과 정서조절 능력을 향상시킴으로써 전반적인 충동행동이 감소되는 것으로 보고되었으며(Fernández-Aranda et al., 2012), 도박중독과 폭식장애의 행위중독 집단에게 적용했을 때도 부정적 정서와 더불어 충동성의 감소에 효과적인 것으로 나타났다(Fagundo et al., 2013; Tárrega et al., 2015).

또한, 마음챙김(mindfulness) 기반 접근이 충동성 및 중독의 개입에 효과를 보이고 있다(Lee HJ et al., 2015; Sancho et al., 2018). 마음챙김이란 충동과 같은 내적 경험에 매 순간 주의를 기울여 알아차리고 의식적으로 행동하는 것을 뜻하며(Kabat-Zinn, 1990), 이는 고통스러운 경험 속에서도 충동적으로 반응하는 것이 아니라 의식적으로 반응하는 것을 가능케 한다(Hölzel et al., 2011). 실제로 마약과 알코올 중독 집단을 대상으로 마음챙김 기반 치료를 실시한 연구에 따르면 부정적 정서뿐만 아니라 충동성도 함께 낮추어 단약에 대한 효능감을 증가시키고 알코올 중독의 수준을 낮추는 것으로 나타났다(Shin JY et al., 2011; Cho JH et al., 2013). 또한 폭식과 같은 행위중독을 대상으로 마음챙김 훈련을 실시했을 때에도 우울과 불안과 같은 부정적 정서가 감소될뿐만 아니라 부정적 정서 상태일 때 충동적으로 반응하는 방식을 변화시킴으로써 폭식행동이 완화되는 것으로 나타났다(Hwang BI, 2017). 특히 중독은 재발률이 높아 이를 위한 개입으로 마음챙김을 기반으로 한 재발 방지(Mindfulness Based Relapse Prevention) 프로그램까지 개발되었다(Bowen et al., 2014). 이러한 개입은 중독행동을 일으키는 부정적 정서와 같은 촉발요인에 대한 자각능력을 높이고 부정적 정서 상태일 때 충동적으로 반응하는 방식보다는 적응적으로 반응하도록 훈련함으로써 치료효과를 장기간 지속시키고 재발의 가능성을 감소시키는 것으로 나타났다. 최근 국내에서도 인터넷(Han YS, 2018) 및 스마트폰 중독(Ha JM et al., 2016; Yu HG et al., 2016) 수준이 높은 대학생들을 대상으로 마음챙김 기반 개입이 실시되었고 이를 통해 충동성과 중독행동의 감소가 보고되기도 하였다.

본 연구는 다음과 같은 한계점을 가진다. 첫째, 본 연구의 자료는 1회의 설문조사를 기반으로 하여 매개모형을 검증하였다. 그러나 원칙적으로는 매개효과는 인과관계를 가정하는 것이므로 추후에는 전향적 종단연구를 실시하여 우울, 불안, 스트레스가 부정 긴급성에 선행하고, 부정 긴급성이 높아진 결과 스마트폰 중독이 증가하는지 확인해볼 필요가 있다. 또한, 부정적 정서를 유도한 후 충동억제 과제를 사용한 실험 연구를 통해 부정 긴급성의 심리적 기제를 보다 명확히 규명하는 것도 필요할 것이다. 둘째, 본 연구는 대학(원)생을 대상으로 하였기 때문에 전체 집단의 특성으로 일반화하기는 어려울 수 있다. 스마트폰 중독은 아동, 청소년들에게도 심각한 문제로 알려져 있고 충동성은 연령이 낮을수록 높게 나타났기 때문에 부정 긴급성의 효과가 연령에 따라 다르게 나타나는지 추후 연구 대상의 범위를 확대시켜 살펴볼 수 있을 것이다. 셋째, 본 연구는 일반인을 대상으로 부정적 정서와 스마트폰 중독 수준을 측정하였기 때문에 치료가 필요한 임상군을 위한 시사점을 제공하기에는 한계가 있다. 따라서 추후에는 임상군에게도 본 연구 모델을 검증해볼 필요가 있다.

종합하면, 본 연구는 우울, 불안, 또는 스트레스와 스마트폰 중독에 영향을 미치는 부정 긴급성의 기제를 규명하였다. 이러한 결과는 스마트폰 중독의 개입에 있어 구체적인 시사점을 제공하는 데 기여할 수 있을 것이다.
